A DOT physical exam (also called a CDL medical exam or DOT medical exam) is the physical evaluation required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to confirm that a commercial driver is medically qualified to safely operate a commercial motor vehicle. The exam covers vision, hearing, blood pressure, heart health, mobility, and overall physical condition, and results in your DOT medical card (Medical Examiner's Certificate).
Every commercial driver operating in interstate or intrastate commerce is required to hold a current, valid DOT medical card — and it must be renewed periodically, typically every 24 months (or more frequently if your examiner requires a shorter certification period).
