You will need a DOT physical if you:

Are paid to drive a vehicle designed to carry more than 8 people.
Carry hazardous material in your vehicle that requires your vehicle to have a placard.
Drive a vehicle on the interstate with a gross combination weight rating, gross vehicle weight rating, or gross combination weight of over 10,000 pounds.
During a DOT physical, the provider will review your medical history, including past surgeries, medications, and any health problems. You'll have a physical exam checking your height, weight, blood pressure, vision, hearing, and overall health, including your heart, lungs, abdomen, reflexes, and more. A urinalysis is also done to screen for underlying health issues. Additional tests may be required based on the provider's findings.
To get a DOT physical, schedule an appointment with a certified medical examiner listed on the FMCSA National Registry. The process includes a review of your medical history, a physical exam, and a urinalysis.
To prepare for your DOT physical, make sure you get plenty of rest the night before and stay hydrated. Bring a valid ID, your medical records, and a list of any current medications you take. If you have any chronic conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes, ensure they are well-managed and bring relevant documentation. Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine before your appointment, and wear comfortable clothing for the exam. Being prepared will help make the process smoother and faster.
Certain medical conditions can disqualify you from obtaining a DOT card, including uncontrolled high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, heart disease, severe vision or hearing loss, and substance abuse. If you have a condition that may affect your ability to safely operate a vehicle, it’s important to consult with your doctor before scheduling a DOT physical.
