Physical examinations are a crucial part of maintaining good health and preventing illness. They allow healthcare providers to assess a patient's overall well-being, identify potential health risks, and provide appropriate care and treatment.
Regular physical examinations are important for both adults and children, as they can help detect health problems before they become more serious. For example, a routine physical may identify signs of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes, which can be treated more effectively if caught early. Additionally, physical exams can help individuals stay up-to-date with important preventive health measures, such as vaccinations and cancer screenings.

During the DOT physical you will be asked about:
• Your medical history, including: If you’ve ever had any surgeries, or hospitalizations
• Any medicines you’re taking, including prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines.
• Any health problems you’ve have, especially heart or blood pressure issues.
• If you use tobacco, alcohol, or illegal substances.
• If you’ve ever failed a drug test.
• If you ever received less than a 2-year DOT medical clearance.
All interstate CMV drivers must have a physical examination at least every 2 years; however, the medical examiner may determine that you need more frequent examinations (for example, annually or every 6 months).
The National Registry program does not change how often you need to obtain a medical examination; it only requires that you go to a certified medical examiner.
